‘Red Eye’ is a gorgeous new Allium, that is ready to flower from May until July. It produces bundles of dome-shaped, bi-coloured white and rich red blooms, that gracefully stand upon erect stems, amongst a clump forming mound of fresh green, strap-like foliage. Ideal for planting within borders, low maintenance, cottage and cut flower gardening schemes, be sure to also plant up in a contemporary patio pot. Happy to progress in direct sunlight, watch it flourish to a height of 60cm and spread to around 15cm. Allium balsaticum ‘Red Eye’ stands out from the crowd. A striking and unusual variety, it bears tight, spherical heads of starry white flowers, each one studded with a dark red eye surrounded by a pink halo. Alliums thrive in free-draining soils in full sun. If growing in clay soils, add grit when planting to improve drainage. Avoid planting in cold wet soils as the bulbs are prone to rot in these conditions. Plant allium bulbs at a depth of 10cm (4”) and a distance of 10cm (4”) apart. A slow release fertilizer can be added to poor soils at the time of planting to improve fertility. When growing alliums, plant them where the leaves of other plants will cover the base of their stems. This will hide the old foliage which dies back before flowering begins.
