Currants are a versatile fruit, perfect for enjoying throughout the season and making delicious jams, pies, or freezing for later use. Our collection includes healthy, 1-year-old bare root plants that are already pruned and ready to establish quickly once planted. From the second season, each plant will produce over 3.5kg (7lb) of fruit and continue to yield for up to 10 years. Height and spread: 120cm (48″). The collection contains one plant of each variety: Blackcurrant ‘Ben Connan’: A compact, high-yielding variety that produces large, glossy black fruits with a rich, full flavour. Estimated time to first crop: 16-20 months (4-8 months for premium bare root). Estimated time to peak yield: 16-20 months. Redcurrant ‘Rovada’: This variety produces an abundance of large, sweet red berries from mid-July to August. Estimated time to first crop: 4-8 months. Estimated time to peak yield: 28-32 months (16-20 months for premium bare root). Whitecurrant ‘Blanka’: This variety bears sweet, large, translucent berries in clusters from late July through August. Estimated time to first crop: 4-8 months. Estimated time to peak yield: 28-32 months (16-20 months for premium bare root). The Premium Currant Collection includes: 1 x Blackcurrant ‘Ben Connan’ Premium 3-litre potted plant 1 x Redcurrant ‘Rovada’ Premium 3-litre potted plant 1 x Whitecurrant ‘Blanka’ Premium bare root plant Currants prefer a position in full sun but will tolerate semi shade. Shelter from cold winds and late spring frosts as these conditions may damage the flowers, and reduce the yield of fruit later in the year. Grow currants in rich, moist, well drained soil. Incorporate plenty of well rotted manure into the ground prior to planting. Plant currant bushes between late autumn and spring, at a distance of 1.5m (5′) apart and a depth of 5cm (2″) lower than the soil mark on the stem. Planting currants slightly deep will encourage the production of extra stems from below ground level.
