If there is one essential for the summer flower garden, this has to be it! The ultimate in care-free gardening! Once planted that’s virtually it. Just water and watch them grow – you do not even have to remove faded blooms – it just keeps on flowering until the autumn frosts! Large double flowers 5-6cm (2-2½”) across in a vibrant range of colours. Height 20-25cm (8-10″). HHA – Half-hardy annual.
Tubers are ideal for containers and baskets, making a larger plant in the first year than plug plants or growing from seed. From February, start tuberous begonias off in well-drained, moist compost in a warm, frost-free position in bright light. When planting begonia tubers, position them just below the compost surface with the indented side facing upwards. In hanging baskets the tubers can be planted at a 45 degree angle with their roots toward the centre, to encourage plants to cascade over the sides of the basket. When begonia plants are well grown and all risk of frost has passed, gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over a period of 7 to 10 days, before planting them in their final positions. Choose a sunny or semi shaded position that is protected from strong winds.
