‘Edda’ is a gorgeous Old man’s beard, that is ready to flower from May until September. It produces masses of huge, maroon striped blooms, that each feature a vivid maroon and white speckled centre. Smothering a compact, yet deciduous growing habit of fresh green foliage, this vibrant Clematis is perfect for growing in containers for trailing, along walls and fences or in cottage themed landscapes. Position in semi shade and watch it flourish in height to 120cm, along with a spread of 75cm. Compact and colourful – Clematis ‘Edda’ will brighten up even the smallest of gardens. Flowering with enthusiasm, this striking cultivar bears its rich purple, maroon-striped flowers from May to August, producing a second flush even before the first flowers fade. When planting clematis, choose a position in sun or semi-shade and plant the climber deeply in moist, fertile, well drained soil. Position the top of the rootball at a depth of 7.5cm (3″) below soil level, to encourage new shoots to form from the base of the plant. Clematis dislike soils that are particularly wet or dry. Such soils can be improved by the addition of plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost. When growing clematis in patio containers use a soil based compost such as John Innes No.3. Train clematis plants onto a suitable support such as trellis, wires or a freestanding climbing frame.
