The leaves of Rhododendron “Firecracker,” a robust deciduous shrub in the Azalea family, turn a vivid orange and gold in the fall. Late in the spring, deep crimson buds open to dazzling orange-red blooms. Its vibrant colours are ideal for bringing life to darkened borders. It, like all Azaleas, prefers acid soil and is an excellent shrub for a chilly, north-facing location. Height and spread: 120 cm (48″). Deep red buds open to glowing orange-red blooms in late spring. A hardy deciduous shrub from the Azalea group, Rhododendron ‘Firecracker’ is equally vibrant in autumn when its foliage turns to bright orange and gold. Grow Rhododendrons in moist, well drained, acid soil that has been enriched with plenty of well rotted organic matter. Choose a position in semi or dappled shade with shelter from cold drying winds. Many dwarf Rhododendrons can cope with a sunny position provided that the soil remains reliably moist. Where soil conditions are alkaline, Rhododendron plants are best grown in patio containers, using a mix of ericaceous compost and a soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3. Rhododendrons are surface rooting so it is important to avoid planting them too deeply.
