‘Chevalier’ is a gorgeous Old man’s beard, that is ready to flower from June until October. It produces masses of semi and fully double, rich purple blooms, that each feature a vivid lime centre. Smothering a compact, yet deciduous growing habit of fresh green foliage, this vibrant Clematis is perfect for growing in containers on the patio, along walls and fences or in cottage themed landscapes. Position in semi shade and watch it flourish in height to 180cm, along with a spread of 100cm. This fascinating Clematis bears single, semi-double and fully double flowers all at the same time! The rich purple flowers of Clematis ‘Chevalier’ make an intriguing display from early summer right through to September. With a neat, compact habit, this free-flowering deciduous climber is well suited to small gardens and containers. When planting clematis, choose a position in sun or semi-shade and plant the climber deeply in moist, fertile, well drained soil. Position the top of the rootball at a depth of 7.5cm (3″) below soil level, to encourage new shoots to form from the base of the plant. Clematis dislike soils that are particularly wet or dry. Such soils can be improved by the addition of plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost. When growing clematis in patio containers use a soil based compost such as John Innes No.3. Train clematis plants onto a suitable support such as trellis, wires or a freestanding climbing frame.
