Clematis tangutica is a unique Old man’s beard, that blooms from July until November. It produces masses of lemon-coloured flowers, that are lantern shaped and feature protruding stamens. Much loved for its silky seed heads that appear in the colder months, watch them attract beautiful wildlife and add extra seasonal interest to your garden. Add into cottage themed landscapes and grow along walls, fences or obelisks. Position in semi shade and watch it thrive to a height of 400cm, along with a spread of 250cm. This vigorous clematis will easily cover a house wall, large trellis or arch where its relaxed, billowing habit will soften hard structures. When planting clematis, choose a position in sun or semi-shade and plant the climber deeply in moist, fertile, well drained soil. Position the top of the rootball at a depth of 7.5cm (3″) below soil level, to encourage new shoots to form from the base of the plant. Clematis dislike soils that are particularly wet or dry. Such soils can be improved by the addition of plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost. When growing clematis in patio containers use a soil based compost such as John Innes No.3. Train clematis plants onto a suitable support such as trellis, wires or a freestanding climbing frame.
