Hydrangea anomala ssp. petiolaris (the climbing hydrangea) takes a long time to develop, but it’s well worth the two or three-year wait. It will quickly spread and cover normally difficult-to-grow areas once it takes off. It creates a thick cover accentuated by frilly white flower heads in early summer, making it an excellent choice for a shady wall. Height 301cm+. It is supplied in a 3 litre pot. Hydrangea petiolaris thrives in a sunny, semi shaded or full shade position, with shelter from cold, drying winds. Grow hydrangea plants in any rich fertile, moist soil. Improve the soil prior to planting by adding plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost, ensuring that it is mixed in thoroughly and deeply. Grow Hydrangea petiolaris against walls and fences where it will cling and support itself via aerial roots.
