‘Vuyk’s Scarlet’ is a striking hardy shrub that is much adored for its trumpet-shaped, crimson red blooms. You will witness an abundance from April until May, that smother a low growing, compact habit of deep green leaflets. A beautiful addition to the front of borders, patio pots and tropical themed landscapes, it will really liven up dull outdoor spaces and remain easy to care for all year round. Rhododendron ‘Vuyk’s Scarlet’ produces masses of crimson red, funnel-shaped flowers in early May. Grow Rhododendrons in moist, well drained, acid soil that has been enriched with plenty of well rotted organic matter. Choose a position in semi or dappled shade with shelter from cold drying winds. Many dwarf Rhododendrons can cope with a sunny position provided that the soil remains reliably moist. Where soil conditions are alkaline, Rhododendron plants are best grown in patio containers, using a mix of ericaceous compost and a soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3. Rhododendrons are surface rooting so it is important to avoid planting them too deeply.
