Renowned for its striking foliage, Caryota mitis, commonly known as the Fish Tail Palm, is a unique and eye-catching houseplant. Its slender, upright stems grow with a stiff, vertical posture before curving into elegant, fan-like clusters of triangular green leaflets. Native to the tropical regions of Asia, this plant’s vibrant leaves evoke the lush, dense canopies of a tropical rainforest. With its upright growth habit, it’s an ideal choice for corner spaces or areas with limited room. Maximum height: 2m (6.5ft). Spread: 1m (3.2ft). Valued for its fabulous foliage, Caryota mitis is a distinctive houseplant which certainly deserves its moniker of ‘Fish Tail Palm’. Grow in bright indirect light, well away from direct sunlight. Avoid positioning this plant close to cold draughts and radiators. Maintain an average room temperature of 15-25°C. Water regularly to keep the top 2 inches of compost consistently moist whilst ensuring good drainage so the root ball is never saturated. This houseplant appreciates high humidity so spray it regularly or place the pot on a pebble tray half filled with water. Reduce watering during the winter. Feed every 2-3 weeks during the growing season (March to September).
