‘Rubella’ is an attractive shrub that is a popular choice for patio pots and sunny borders. From April until June, it generates scented white blossom that contrasts perfectly against its neat, deep green rosettes of glossy leaflets. As Winter approaches you will witness a spray of vibrant red buds, they add lots of garden interest and attract lots of hungry wildlife. Be sure to place this easy to care for Skimmia in a shaded spot and watch it grow to a height and spread of 120cm. It would make a fabulous addition to scented, wildlife, cottage and woodland gardening schemes, as well as interesting hedging to use as a privacy screen, extra security or just to add that pop of colour! Perfect for giving all-year interest in a shady spot in the garden, Skimmia japonica ‘Rubella’ makes a neat mound of glossy rosettes of aromatic evergreen foliage. Distinctive red buds bring colour throughout the winter months, opening as deliciously fragrant white blooms in spring. This shrub is easy to grow in neutral or acidic soil or can be grown in a container on the patio in ericaceous compost. Tough and long lasting, Skimmia is a good choice for beginner gardeners. Height and spread: 120cm (47″). Grow Skimmia plants in a dappled or fully shaded position, in moderately fertile, rich, well drained soil which can be neutral to acidic in pH. Avoid full sun, as this can cause yellowing of the leaves. Alternatively grow Skimmia in large containers, using a soil based compost such as John Innes No.3 mixed with ericaceous (acidic) compost.
