This woodland species from the buttercup family quickly spreads to create a vibrant carpet of golden-yellow flowers each spring. The cup-shaped blossoms of winter aconite draw pollinators to your garden, and their bright, cheerful blooms pair wonderfully with snowdrops and bluebells, creating a stunning woodland display. Plant winter aconite bulbs in a sunny position or in the partial shade of deciduous trees. Eranthis hyemalis thrive in reliably moist, well drained soil that is rich in organic matter. Add plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost to the soil prior to planting to improve less than ideal soils. Aconites should be planted at a depth of 5cm (2″) and a distance of 5cm (2″) apart. For natural looking drifts, gently cast the bulbs across the planting area and plant them where they land!
