It generates a small flurry of trumpet-shaped red flowers, that top a clump forming habit of arching, pink and green variegated slender leaflets. Grow Phormium on fertile, well-drained soil. Choose a protected position in full sun. Phormiums are well suited to mild coastal locations and can cope in poorer soils, but do enjoy a fertile soil – so it is well worth incorporating some well-rotted manure into the soil when planting.
