Description
The Visionääri rug, designed by Tomi Leppänen for MUM’s, is adorned with an abstract pattern based on typographical elements. Part of Leppänen’s Typewriter collection, the rug is inspired by Bauhaus and specifically the work of textile designer Anni Albers, who experimented in the 1930s with using her typewriter as a tool for making patterns. The colourful pattern of Visionääri (Finnish for “visionary”) is also created using the dashes and parentheses of a typewriter.
The Visionääri rug is handcrafted in India, with the pattern carefully embroidered by hand. Although the rug’s appearance and texture resemble those of a tightly-woven wool rug, it is actually made of a rather surprising material: recycled PET plastic bottles. Thanks to the ingenious material, the rug is very durable, easy to care for, and suitable also for outdoor use – but doesn’t really look like an outdoor rug. Therefore, it is just as at home indoors as it is on the balcony or patio!
