Kiwi ‘Geneva’ is one of the oldest hardy kiwi varieties, known for its vigorous growth and early bloom. It produces an abundance of small, 1-inch fruits with a delightful honey flavour and fragrance. In full sun, the green fruits develop a reddish bloom, ripening in September and October. As part of the Actinidia arguta species, also known as Baby Kiwi or Hardy Kiwi, this variety is perfect for UK gardens, thriving in temperatures as low as -10 to -15°C. Hardy kiwis produce small, smooth, gooseberry-sized fruits that are sweeter than traditional kiwis and don’t require peeling due to their smooth skin. Established vines can yield up to 13kg of fruit. With fast-growing, twining climbers and simple ovate leaves, they produce fragrant creamy-white flowers in summer, making them a stunning feature for trellises, pergolas, or walls in sunny, south-facing spots. The oval fruits are packed with Vitamin C and are delicious when eaten straight from the vine. Height and spread: 6-8m (19.6-26ft). Pollination: Female variety (requires a male variety for pollination). One of the oldest hardy kiwis, Kiwi ‘Geneva’ is a vigorous, early-blooming variety, bearing masses of 1-inch, tasty fruits with a honey flavour and aroma. Grow kiwi plants in a sunny position in any fertile, well drained soil. A sheltered position is essential as kiwis are particularly sensitive to adverse weather conditions. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the planting hole. Plant kiwi vines, firm in and water well. Provide the twining stems with an appropriate support wires strung between sturdy posts, to train as an espalier.
