Cercis siliquastrum, commonly known as the Judas Tree, is a compact, bushy tree with a well-branched structure, making it a great option for smaller gardens. Its striking rosy-pink flowers emerge from the older wood, creating a graceful, pendulous effect. The heart-shaped leaves, which follow the blooms, add to its visual appeal and transform into a vibrant yellow in autumn. Renowned for its architectural form, the Judas Tree is particularly stunning when in full bloom in spring, offering some of the most vivid seasonal colour for the garden. Height and Spread: Up to 10 meters (32 feet). Commonly called ‘The Judas Tree’, Cercis siliquastrum is a superb tree for small gardens. Myth has it that Judas Escariot hanged himself on this type of tree during biblical times. Even if not true, the tree does orginate from that part of the world. In spring the tree is covered in cerise pink flowers, followed by heart shaped leaves, which turn a vivid yellow in autumn. It makes a great focal point in any residential garden, and is perfect for front gardens. Height and Spread: up to 10m (32′). Plant Cercis siliquastrum into their final location straight away, as plants will dislike disturbance. Plant into a moist, but well-drained soil in full sun. A south-facing position is particularly recommended, so that the heat can ripen the summer shoots, priming them for the following spring’s display.
