‘Susan’ is an exquisite Magnolia that blooms from March until May. It generates bundles of deep magenta flowers that form beautiful oval shapes when open, alongside its twisted petals. Each bloom can measure up to 15cm across in width and bears a heavenly scent, it will attract lots of wildlife and add a pop of colour to lifeless gardens. Its compact growing habit is much loved and serves as a fantastic, neat specimen plant. Great for adding to woodlands and borders, be sure to position in partial shade where it can flourish to a height of 4m, along with a spread of 3m. Wherever positioned in your garden, ‘Susan’ will add drama and attract lots of attention! . Plant magnolias in a sunny or semi shaded position with protection from cold winds and hard spring frosts. Magnolias prefer a rich, moist, well drained, acid to neutral soil. Incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost to improve the soil prior to planting, mixing it thoroughly and deeply. Magnolia plants establish quicker when their roots are shaded. Following planting, apply a mulch of rotted bark chips, manure or garden compost, taking care not to mound it around the stem of the plant.
When growing magnolia in a patio container use a blend of ericaceous compost mixed with John Innes No. 3.
