‘Dark Chocolate’ is a superb Baptisia, that is ready to flower from May until September. It generates bundles of chocolate-purple blooms, that form in neat spires, amongst a bushy growing habit of fresh green foliage. Happy to develop in direct sunlight, watch it create a vibrant addition to dull cottage and cut flower gardening schemes! It will thrive to a height of 90cm and will spread to around 75cm. One of a range of innovative new Baptisia australis hybrids that have improved on the species with an exciting palette of intense colours, a long flowering period and a compact habit that suits smaller gardens.
Pot up Baptisias and grow them on until large enough to plant outdoors. When they well grown and all risk of frost has passed, acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days. Grow in light, acid to neutral, well drained soil in full sun. Water regularly until established.
In autumn, cut down down to the ground. New foliage will emerge in spring. Apply a mulch around the plant in spring every couple of years.
