Named in honor of Pope John Paul II, this striking clematis variety features large, cream-coloured petals highlighted by a soft pink stripe and complemented by deep red anthers. Clematis ‘Jan Pawel II’ is perfect for adding vibrant colour to walls and fences, and it can also rapidly cover structures like obelisks or pergolas. For the best display of its delicate hues, plant it against a dark backdrop. Height: 300 cm (118″). Spread: 90 cm (35″). Pruning group: 2. This delicate Clematis was named after one of the most popular Popes in modern history, Pope John Paul II and was created in Poland in 1980. Clematis ‘Jan Pawel II’ has beautifully symetric, large flowers that are soft cream with a pale pink stripe and deep red anthers in the centre. When planting clematis, choose a position in sun or semi-shade and plant the climber deeply in moist, fertile, well drained soil. Position the top of the rootball at a depth of 7.5cm (3″) below soil level, to encourage new shoots to form from the base of the plant. Clematis dislike soils that are particularly wet or dry. Such soils can be improved by the addition of plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost. When growing clematis in patio containers use a soil based compost such as John Innes No.3. Train clematis plants onto a suitable support such as trellis, wires or a freestanding climbing frame.
