Dinner Plate Dahlias are grouped together because they share a few key characteristics that make them distinct from other dahlia varieties. Primarily, they are known for their giant blooms, often measuring up to 12 inches (30 cm) across. This uniform size, combined with their showy, dramatic appearance, sets them apart. Additionally, these dahlias typically have sturdy stems that can support the weight of their large flowers, making them perfect for the back of borders or for cut flower arrangements. The grouping is a way to highlight their impressive scale and visual impact, making them stand out in gardens and floral displays.

Dahlia ‘Dinner Plate’ Collection comprises 1 tuber each of:
Dahlia ‘AC Dark Horse’ – A semi-cactus variety with curled bright pink petals each tipped in dazzling white. Height: 100cm (39″). Spread: 50cm (20″).
Dahlia ‘Akita’– Burnt orange petals with red and yellow highlights form large blooms. Height: 100cm (39″). Spread: 50cm (20″).
Dahlia ‘Bodacious’ – Enormous bicolour blooms in shades of hot orange and pale gold bring a tropical feel to borders. Height: 120cm (48″). Spread: 60cm (24″).
Dahlia ‘Ferncliff Illusion’ – A spectacular variety that amazingly grows over 5ft tall! Height: 160cm (63″). Spread: 60cm (24″).
Dahlia ‘Wanda’s Capella’ – Large buttery yellow blooms that measure up to 30cm (12″) diameter. Height: 120cm (48″). Spread: 60cm (24″).

Culinary information: All dahlia flowers and tubers are edible. The flavours and textures can vary greatly depending on the soil and conditions in which they were grown. Flavours range from water chestnut through to a spicy apple or even carrot. For more details about edible flowers click here.

Plant Dahlia tubers outdoors in April after all risk of frost has passed. Choose a sunny position in moist well drained soil. Prepare the soil by digging in plenty of well rotted manure or compost. Plant tubers at a depth of 15cm (6″) and water well. Alternatively, start tubers into growth in pots of compost in a frost free greenhouse. Transplant them into their final positions outdoors in June.
