As the largest of the blue Hostas, Hosta ‘Blue Angel’ is a slow-growing, hardy perennial that forms impressive clumps of glaucous grey-blue leaves, each growing up to 40cm (16″) in length. These substantial leaves provide a stunning backdrop for the bell-shaped white flowers that appear in June. A well-known cultivar, Hosta ‘Blue Angel’ has earned an RHS Award of Garden Merit for its outstanding performance in the garden. This variety is perfect for transforming a damp, shaded corner into a striking focal point. Height: 90cm (36″) Spread: 120cm (48″) Culinary note: The best part to harvest is the ‘hoston’, the rolled-up leaf as it emerges in the spring. Small hostons can be quickly fried and used in stir-fries, while larger ones are better boiled and served as a vegetable. For more information on edible flowers, click here. Please note: Plant height and spread may vary with the seasons, so we list by pot size rather than a fixed plant size. The plant’s appearance upon delivery may differ from the images shown. This giant Hosta is the largest of the blue Plaintain lilies as each leaf can grow up to 40cm (1′ 4″) long. Hosta ‘Blue Angel’ is a slow growing hardy perennial that gradually forms into a structural clump consisting of luscious grey-blue giant leaves which form a great backdrop for the white flowers in June. Hosta ‘Blue Angel’ has the coveted RHS AGM (Award of Garden Merit) and it is a great choice for damp, shady corners of the garden. Height: 90cm (3’0″). Spread: 1.2m (3’11”). Grow Hosta plants in sun or dappled shade, on rich, moist, well-drained soil. Plants can grow well in a sunny border, but will need to be kept reliably moist. Plants may perform better on slightly acid soils. Before planting, work some fresh compost or general fertiliser into the top 20cm of the soil. Alternatively plant Hostas in patio containers in soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3.
