Apple ‘Sunset’ is an award winning variety which is very similar to ‘Cox’ and makes a fantastic alternative! It produces red-orange blushed skin fruits of a classic English dessert apple, with a strong, tart taste. This variety has great disease resistance and a compact habit. Apple ‘Sunset’ is simple to grow and boasts bumper crops that can be harvested at the end of September and will store until December. Enjoy picked fresh from the tree or make into a delicious juice.Apple rootstocks:M27 – Extreme dwarf reaching a mature height of up to 1.5m (5′)M9/ Pajam 9/ P9 – Dwarf reaching a mature height of up to 2.5m (8′)M26 – Dwarf reaching a mature height of 2.5-3m (8-10′)M6 – Semi dwarf reaching a mature height of up to 3m (10′)MM106 – Semi dwarf reaching a mature height of up to 4m (13′)This variety is partially self-fertile. These plants are lifted from the nursery field when dormant, and sent to you in late autumn or spring for planting. They often look dead on arrival, but they are just resting in the dormant period and will establish quickly for a strong start in the garden come spring. Set out in prepared soil in holes wide enough and deep enough to lay out the roots. Tread down the planting soil to knock out air pockets. Water well to settle. Apply a mulch to protect roots from cold temperatures. If conditions prevent immediate planting, set roughly into loose soil or a pot of compost (‘heeling in’) to protect the roots. Set these at the same level as they were in the nursery field – you should see a soil line at the base of the stem. Stake trees, taller shrubs and roses to prevent root disturbance.
