‘Alaina’ is a gorgeous Old man’s beard, that is ready to flower from May until October. It produces masses of huge, bright pink blooms, that each feature a vivid lemon centre. Smothering a compact, yet deciduous growing habit of fresh green foliage, this vibrant Clematis is perfect for growing in containers on the patio, along walls and fences or in cottage themed landscapes. Position in semi shade and watch it flourish in height to 120cm, along with a spread of 75cm. Wide, bright pink blooms with darker pink bars down the centre of each petal make an eye-catching display. As the flowers mature they fade through several shades of pink, unless grown in shade where the blooms will keep their vivid colour for longer. When planting clematis, choose a position in sun or semi-shade and plant the climber deeply in moist, fertile, well drained soil. Position the top of the rootball at a depth of 7.5cm (3″) below soil level, to encourage new shoots to form from the base of the plant. Clematis dislike soils that are particularly wet or dry. Such soils can be improved by the addition of plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost. When growing clematis in patio containers use a soil based compost such as John Innes No.3. Train clematis plants onto a suitable support such as trellis, wires or a freestanding climbing frame.
