Lonicera X Brownii Dropmore Scarlet
Long flowering variety boasting vibrant flowers!
Flowering over a long period from July to September the ‘Dropmore Scarlet’ is a fierce honeysuckle with long, trumpet-shaped red-orange flowers, sometimes followed by vibrant red berries. With exception to the bitterest of winters this Honeysuckle is robust and semi-evergreen. The ‘Dropmore Scarlet’ is excellent for rapidly covering walls and fences or unsightly features in the garden. Despite being unscented, this vigorous climber more than compensates with its flame-coloured blooms and blue-green leaves.
Culinary uses: Parboiled the leaves can be used as a vegetable. The sweet nectar from the flowers can be sucked and made into a syrup or puddings. Tea can also be produced from the flowers, leaves, and buds.
Height: 4m (13′). Spread: 2m (7′).
Plant honeysuckle against a suitable, sturdy support such as trellis or strong wires attached to walls and pergolas, in fertile, moist, free draining soil. Poor soils can be improved by adding plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost. Choose a position in sun or semi-shade. When growing honeysuckle in patio containers, use soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3.
