Clematis ‘Montana Elizabeth’ – Clematis plant

Awarded an RHS Award of Garden Merit, this Old man’s beard is a well-known popular variety of Clematis. It is a vigorous climber that enjoys sprawling its glossy green foliage throughout hedges and other mature shrubs, it also expands well over sunny walls and fences. It grows in height to around 10m (30’) and spreads to a superb 3m (10’). ‘Elizabeth’, like all Montana varieties spills well up climbing frames, trellis and structures.

This Clematis has sweet-smelling blooms that appear in the Springtime and disappear early in Summer. It has a vigorous habit, growing prettily in containers perfect for patios. Clematis ‘Montana Elizabeth’ is particularly attractive, its buds contain four baby pink petals and have contrasting lemon-yellow stamens. Its foliage is emerald green in colour but has unusual purple-tinged green leaflets.

When planting clematis, choose a position in sun or semi-shade and plant the climber deeply in moist, fertile, well drained soil. Position the top of the rootball at a depth of 7.5cm (3″) below soil level, to encourage new shoots to form from the base of the plant. Clematis dislike soils that are particularly wet or dry. Such soils can be improved by the addition of plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost. When growing clematis in patio containers use a soil based compost such as John Innes No.3. Train clematis plants onto a suitable support such as trellis, wires or a freestanding climbing frame.
