This striking perennial is much adored for its star-shaped red blooms, that form in tight clusters. They stand proudly upon lengthy green stems, surrounded by a clump forming mound of fresh green foliage. Perfect for damp environments, be sure to incorporate into cottage and water gardens, as well as streams and pond edging. Happy to develop in direct sunlight, watch it flourish to a height of 120cm, along with a spread of 30cm. Lychnis chalcedonica, otherwise known as Maltese Cross, is the most spectacular of perennials. With tight groupings of crimson star-shaped flowers displayed on statuesque stems, the Maltese Cross flowers throughout the mid-summer months, giving spectacular colour and excitement to the back of sunny borders. Lychnis chalcedonica thrives in a moist boggy location, so is perfect at the edge of garden ponds and in marsh-like areas. Maltese Cross is the proud holder of an RHS AGM. Height: 120cm (48″). Spread: 30cm (12″). Grow Lychnis in a sunny or semi shaded position on fertile, well drained soil that remains reliably moist in summer. Also suitable for clay soils, damp or boggy areas and planting around the edges of ponds.
