A recent introduction, this elder has deep burgundy foliage with pink scented flowers. It is darker than other varieties and makes it a stunning specimen plant. Flowers May-June. Height 301cm+.
Culinary note: Some parts of these flowers are edible. The flowerheads are commonly used in infusions, making a very common drink and can be made into a syrup or cordial. They can also be dipped into a light batter and then fried to make elderflower fritters. Both flowers and berries can be made into elderberry wine.Grow Sambucus in any moist but well drained soil in full sun or dappled shade, plants will also survive on poor, chalky soils.
