Gardenia Crown Jewels
Did you know you can grow your own tough, hardy outdoor gardenia? This variety boasts large pearly white, waxy double blooms, contrasting dramatically against rich, glossy evergreen leaves. The fragrance of ‘Crown Jewels’ has one of the strongest, most intoxicating yet beautiful scents that will infuse patios, gardens and home all summer long with its excellent scent.
These thickly petaled, bowl-shaped flowers will smother your shrub from July to September, whilst the magnificent foliage with deep green leaves will remain all through the winter. As if it couldn’t get any better, this Gardenia is super low maintenance and easy to grow in patio pots, flower beds and garden borders. It is frost-hardy but may need protection in severe winters. Height: 60cm (24″). Spread: 120cm (47″).
Culinary tip: Use these extremely fragrant blooms in jams and preserves or add to cakes for extra flavour.
Plant gardenia in sheltered borders or containers in any well drained, rich fertile, neutral to acid soil. Choose a sheltered position in dappled or semi shade. Water regularly until gardenia plants are fully established. Where possible, use rainwater as the lime contained in tap water will reduce the soils acidity over time.
