‘Black Velvet’ is an eye-catching Flax that is a popular choice for adding texture, drama and height to dull outdoor spaces. It boasts masses of slender bronze-black leaflets that form in tidy clumps and produce ruby red blooms from August until October. This Phormium enjoys growing in a sunny spot and sits well in borders, coastal, cottage, tropical and low maintenance gardening schemes. Also, an easy patio plant to grow, your hardy perennial is incredibly versatile and will easily take centre stage as a showy specimen plant. It will grow in height to 90cm, along with a spread of 60cm. Grow Phormium on fertile, well-drained soil. Choose a protected position in full sun. Phormiums are well suited to mild coastal locations and can cope in poorer soils, but do enjoy a fertile soil – so it is well worth incorporating some well-rotted manure into the soil when planting.
