This Mahonia Collection is a fantastic hardy evergreen shrub for those difficult shady areas. Large, golden yellow flower spikes will burst into colour from November throughout the winter, cheering up your garden and exuding a wonderful perfume during those cold, dreary months. Clusters of purple berries will appear as the flowers fade, contrasting beautifully with the evergreen foliage. These fantastic Oregon Grapes are ideal for providing interest in your garden throughout the year and will attract plenty of garden pollinators!Height and spread: 4m (12’).Collection comprises:Mahonia x media ‘Charity’ – Dense clusters of bright yellow flower spikes will brighten even the darkest corner of the garden.Mahonia x media ‘Winter Sun’ – A handsome RHS AGM variety bearing clusters of slender flower spikes.Culinary note: The ripe fruits are too acidic to eat raw but can be stewed with sugar or other fruits and made into jelly or pies. They are used to help the milder flavour of some fruits or to make a lemonade-like drink. Young leaves are simmered in water and eaten as a snack. Grow Mahonia plants in borders or containers in any rich fertile, well drained soil in full sun or semi shade. Although Mahonia plants are hardy they will appreciate a sheltered position away from cold, drying winds. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the soil.
