‘Amethyst’ is a gorgeous hardy shrub, that flowers from July until October. It produces bundles of maroon-coloured blooms, that form in delicate panicles, above a compact growing habit of oak-shaped, green-purple leaflets. Much loved for its low maintenance, make sure you incorporate into woodland, cottage and wildlife gardening schemes for a bold focal point and great Autumnal colour. Place in dappled shade and watch it thrive to a height of 2m, along with a spread of 1.8m. This rare variety is a lovely twist on the ordinary white-flowered form of Hydrangea quercifolia. Hydrangea quercifolia prefers a sunny or semi shaded position, with shelter from cold, drying winds. Grow hydrangea plants in any rich fertile, moist soil. Improve the soil prior to planting by adding with plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost, ensuring that it is mixed in thoroughly and deeply. Alternatively plant hydrangea quercifolia in patio containers in soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3.
