‘Tala’ is a wonderful new Guzmania, that is much adored for its torch-like, vibrant orange flower. It blooms from May until October and stands proudly above a crown of strap-like, deep green leaflets. Easy to care for and happy to progress in dappled shade, be sure to incorporate into a greenhouse, conservatory or modern home interior. It will thrive to a height of 45cm, along with a spread of 30cm. From a crown of stiffly upright, strappy, dark green leaves, rises a strong stem topped by an extraordinary torch-like, orange flower bract. Grow in bright indirect light but avoiding direct sunlight which can burn the leaves. Avoid overwatering which can cause the rosette to rot – always allow the potting mix to dry out between waterings. Ensure that the pot drains fully and never leave the plant to sit in water. This tropical epiphyte enjoys high humidity so mist frequently or place the pot in a pebble tray topped up with water. Fertilise with a small amount of bromeliad feed 3 or 4 times during the growing season. After flowering cut off the spent flower spike. New smaller plants will develop around the base which will flower in future seasons. Epiphytic plants require very little soil and so rarely need potting up.
