‘Winter Beauty’ is a beautiful new Clematis that is ready to bloom from December until March. It produces masses of pearly white flowers, that each feature a bright yellow centre. They cloak a vigorous, yet compact growing habit of fresh green foliage and add vibrancy wherever placed. Perfect for planting in patio pots and cottage gardens, keep positioned in partial shade and enjoy watching it grow to a height of 4m, along with a spread of 1.2m.
Pot up clematis plants and grow them on until large enough to plant in their final positions. When planting Clematis ‘Winter Beauty’ choose a sheltered position in sun or semi-shade, with good protection from drying winds in order to prevent wind scorch.
Plant in free draining, fertile, well-drained soil. This winter flowering variety can suffer from fungal leaf diseases during winter if kept too wet. Before planting, work in plenty of compost into the soil, adding horticultural grit to particularly heavy soils. Avoid planting Clematis ‘Winter Beauty’ too deeply – set the plant so that the top of the compost sits level with the surrounding garden soil.
When growing clematis in patio containers, place a 5cm (2″) layer of gravel at the base of the pot to improve drainage. Use a free draining, 50:50 mix of soil based compost (such as John Innes No.3), and compost to maintain an open, free-draining structure. Train clematis plants onto a suitable support such as trellis, wires or a freestanding climbing frame.
