‘Carnegie’ is a wonderful new Hyacinth, that is ready to bloom from March until May. It produces bundles of star-shaped white flowers, that are borne upon upright stems, emitting a delicious fragrance. Topping a clump forming habit of fresh green foliage, this hardy shrub would be perfect for growing within a border or flowerbed, along with planting in a patio container and incorporating into scented themed landscapes. Happy to progress in semi shade, watch it flourish to a height of 20cm, along with a spread of 15cm. Grow hyacinths in moist, fertile well drained soil in sun or semi shade. Plant hyacinth bulbs approximately 10cm (4″) deep and at a distance of 8cm (3″) apart. To grow hyacinths for indoor displays, plant them in containers of bulb fibre or potting compost with the tip of the bulb just visible above the soil surface. Position them in a cool garage or other well ventilated, dark position at a maximum temperature of 7°C (44°F) for around 6 weeks. Water bulbs only when necessary in order to keep the compost moist. When the growing shoots reach a height of 3cm (1″), move the containers to a cool bright position indoors. Water container-grown hyacinths with care. Avoid over wetting the compost or allowing it to dry out. After flowering, indoor displays can be planted out doors where they will bloom the following spring. Hyacinths that are planted outdoors are virtually maintenance free. Caution: irritant to skin and eyes, harmful if eaten.
