Abelia is a largely underappreciated shrub that offers months of colour, fragrance, and visual appeal in the garden. With its semi-evergreen foliage and arching growth habit, it provides a striking display, especially in autumn when clusters of fragrant flowers bloom. This hardy shrub thrives in warm, sunny spots and is well-suited to dry, sunny borders. Abelia also adapts well to being shaped into a hedge, with its glossy leaves remaining vibrant for most of the year. For optimal hardiness, it’s best grown against a sheltered wall, although Abelia x grandiflora is the hardiest variety. It can reach a height of 3 meters (9 feet) and a spread of up to 4 meters (13 feet). Plant Abelia x grandiflora in garden borders in any fertile, well drained garden soil, in full sun. Alternatively grow Abelia plants in patio containers using soil based compost such as John Innes No.3.
