‘Ethiopian Black Banana’ is a tender perennial, that boasts large glossy leaflets, that each feature a striking red hue. A great addition to tropical gardening schemes, this Ensete also works wonders in a spacious conservatory, greenhouse and large patio pot. Much loved for its speedy growing habit, you can count on this shrub to provide a bold focal point, with its eye-catching trunk and chunky foliage. Easy to care for and happy to progress in full sun, watch it develop in height to 5m, along with a spread of 4m. Add some tropical drama to your patio with this striking Ensete ‘Ethiopian Black Banana’.
Grow Ensete in any moist, fertile, well-drained soil in full sun, with shelter from strong winds. Although it can be grown in a border, this tender banana is best grown in a large pot that can be moved into a cool conservatory or glasshouse over winter.
Feed weekly and water regularly throughout the growing season in spring and summer. Before the first frosts, cut back the top growth leaving 2 or 3 of the newest leaves. Lift specimens planted in the border, reducing the size of the root ball and potting up into a container just big enough to accommodate the roots. Pot up with freely draining compost that is barely moist. Reduce watering of container grown plants ready for moving.
Move the Ensete to a cool conservatory or greenhouse, out of direct sun, maintaining a minimum temperature of 5C (41F). Allow the plant to remain dormant and do not water. When all risk of frost has passed move your plant back outside and begin feeding and watering again as growth commences.
