Polystichum setiferum ‘Herrenhausen’ is a unique fern that thrives in drier soils where many others struggle, making it an excellent addition to woodland borders beneath shrubs and trees. Its finely textured, lacy fronds spread horizontally, forming attractive rosettes. As an evergreen, it provides reliable ground cover throughout the year. While the fronds may appear worn by winter’s end, they can be easily trimmed away to reveal emerging spring bulbs like woodland anemones and daffodils, which are beautifully complemented by fresh green leaflets. This fern is ideal for spring-inspired borders and containers, pairing well with plants like pulmonarias, hostas, and foxgloves. Height and spread: 60cm (24”). Plant ferns in a sheltered spot. Choose a cool position semi-shade or dappled shade on fertile, moist, acid or neutral, soil. Hardy ferns prefer a soil that is rich in organic matter so add some well rotted manure or garden compost to the soil prior to planting.
