Japanese Wineberry is both a visually appealing and edible plant, making it an excellent choice for trellises, walls, or fences. Its striking red, fuzzy stems add winter interest, while the lime green leaves provide a lovely backdrop for the bright red, juicy fruit that appears in late summer. Harvesting in August, these sweet and tangy berries offer a perfect bridge between summer and autumn raspberries. Enjoy them fresh off the bush or use them in cooking, just like raspberries. Although still a rare crop in the UK, Japanese Wineberries are easy to grow, requiring the same care as summer raspberries. Self-fertile and pest-resistant, thanks to their unique bristly stems, they need minimal attention. Height and spread: 2-3m (6.5-10ft). Both ornamental and edible, Japanese Wineberry makes an attractive climbing shrub for a wall, fence or trellis, with bright red, furry stems in winter followed by lime green foliage studded with delicious, bright red fruit.
Grow Japanese Wineberry in a sunny position in any well drained soil. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the soil. The stems will require support – either wires stretched between posts or trellis/arches etc are suitable. Plant in a row, allowing 1.5m between plants. Water well and mulch after planting.
Japanese Wineberries produce fruit on the previous year’s canes. After harvesting, cut out the old, fruited canes, leaving strong young new canes which should be tied together over winter. In spring, untie them and train along the support system.
