The dainty panicles of white, double blooms contrast beautifully with the luscious green heart-shaped leaves of this spreading lilac throughout May and June. Syringa ‘Madame Lemoine’ is a fast-growing variety which is easy to grow and low maintenance. A wonderful specimen shrub for cottage gardens where its nectar rich blooms exude a heavenly perfume and attract plenty of butterflies.Height and spread: 7m (22′).Culinary note: Adding the fragrant flowers to cream cheese or even yoghurt for a hint of lemon flavour. Pot up lilac plants and grow them on until large enough to plant out in their final positions. When plants are well grown and all risk of frost has passed, gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over a period of 7 to 10 days. If received in the autumn, over-winter Syringa plants in a sheltered position, either in a cold frame, cool greenhouse or porch, ready for planting out in spring. Transplant lilac plants into rich fertile, well drained, neutral or alkaline soil in full sun.
