The Kanji is a system of symbols which represent words or ideas and that can have multiple means or pronunciations based on their context. Believed to have originated in China, the original kanji was meant to be a pictogram, a way of expressing an idea through a picture. In the 5th Century, Japan adopted this type of writing as they did not have a language of their own.
