Atlas’ is a robust male variety that doesn’t bear fruit but plays a crucial role in pollinating all female Kiwi varieties. This attractive vine features heart-shaped leaves and produces creamy-white, lightly fragrant flowers in early summer, which are highly attractive to pollinating insects. It can effectively pollinate up to 8 female Kiwi vines. Maximum height and spread: 4-6m (13-20ft). ‘Atlas’ is a vigorous male variety that doesn’t produce fruit but is an essential pollination partner for all other female Kiwi fruits. Grow kiwi plants in a sunny position in any fertile, well drained soil. A sheltered position is essential as kiwis are particularly sensitive to adverse weather conditions. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the planting hole. Plant kiwi vines, firm in and water well. Provide the twining stems with an appropriate support wires strung between sturdy posts, to train as an espalier.
