‘Vanessa’ is a gorgeous Parrotia, that is much adored for its glistening foliage in Spring and Autumn. Each oval-shaped leaflet begins as a deep maroon, progressing to a glossy green in Spring and later transforming to a fiery shade of orange and wine red as Autumn approaches. Its unique, spider-shaped blooms appear as the colder weather starts, attracting lots of attention and adding garden interest with their hot red shade. Perfect for using as a bold specimen shrub in smaller sized outdoor spaces, be sure to incorporate into woodlands and low maintenance gardening schemes, where its upright, compact growing form can be admired. It will enjoy semi shade to progress and will develop in height to 10m, along with a spread of 4m. Parrotia persica ‘Vanessa’ is a stunning, multi-season tree. Selected for its more upright, pyramidal habit than the species, it is especially well-suited to small gardens. Gradually acclimatise Persian Ironwood trees to outdoor conditions over a period of 7 to 10 days. Plant Parrotia persica in any moist, fertile, well-drained soil; it will grow happily in improved clay soils. Incorporate plenty of compost or well-rotted manure prior to planting. Choose a final position in full sun or partial shade.
