The Albizia Ombrella is known for its stunning light green leaves, which resemble delicate ferns or feathers and can grow up to 45 cm in length. During the blooming season, the tree is adorned with fragrant sprays of pink, silk-like flowers that attract bees and butterflies.
Another striking feature of the Albizia is its grey bark, which, as it matures, develops distinctive vertical stripes. Native to subtropical climates, the Albizia is commonly used as forage for livestock in various regions.
Hardy enough to withstand UK winters, it can endure temperatures as low as -25°C. A culinary note: the leaves and flowers can be used to brew a refreshing tea, but the seeds should never be eaten, as they are toxic.
Height: 5m (16′). Spread: 2m (6.5′). Pot up silk tree plants and grow them on in a cool, bright position until large enough to plant outside. Prior to transplanting, acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over a period of 7 to 10 days. Plant albizia in a sheltered position in any well drained soil in full sun.
