Clematis ‘Early Sensation’ – ClematisAs it’s name states, Clematis ‘Early Sensation’ is an early flowering variety, blooming from March until June. It has unmissable giant snowy-white flower heads that form in bundles, creating an attractive display for the eye. It’s stunning flower clusters are complimented by it’s lime green stamens, which later on turn into candyfloss-like seed heads. This Clematis plant beautifully spreads to 1m (3’) and grows to a height of 2m (6’).Unlike some Old man’s beard, Clematis cartmanii has non clinging stems. First of all gold in colour, it’s thick foliage later develops into a rich emerald green, which looks incredible twirling up trellis, fences or posts. This compact Clematis plant enjoys growing alongside other mature shrubs and would look superb grown in a container on a patio. When planting clematis, choose a position in sun or semi-shade and plant the climber deeply in moist, fertile, well drained soil. Position the top of the rootball at a depth of 7.5cm (3″) below soil level, to encourage new shoots to form from the base of the plant. Clematis dislike soils that are particularly wet or dry. Such soils can be improved by the addition of plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost. When growing clematis in patio containers use a soil based compost such as John Innes No.3. Train clematis plants onto a suitable support such as trellis, wires or a freestanding climbing frame.
