This sturdy and weather resistant hardy perennial produces striking, blue-green, ribbed foliage which makes fantastic ground cover. Hosta sieboldiana var. elegans is an award winning variety, producing eye-catching flower spikes in June and July, which rise above its attractive leaves. Hostas are a simple to grow, clump-forming plant which make a great addition to garden borders, woodland areas and patio containers, growing well in shaded areas.Height: 100cm (39″). Spread: 120cm (48″).Culinary note: The best part to use is the hoston, the rolled up leaf as it emerges in the spring. Cooking depends on the size of the hostons, small ones can be fried for a few minutes, going well in stir fries. Thicker ones are better boiled and used as a vegetable. For more details about edible flowers click here. Grow Hosta plants in sun or dappled shade, on rich, moist, well-drained soil. Plants can grow well in a sunny border, but will need to be kept reliably moist. Plants may perform better on slightly acid soils. Before planting, work some fresh compost or general fertiliser into the top 20cm of the soil. Alternatively plant Hostas in patio containers in soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3.
