Clematis ‘Ernest Markham’ – Clematis plantPopping pink velvety blooms adorn this Clematis from late Summer until late Autumn. It’s frilly tissue-paper-like petals are paired gracefully with contrasting pale yellow stamens and have incredible overlapping sepals. It grows to a height of 4m (12’) and spreads to 1.5m (5’). This Old man’s beard loves to climb and looks stunning draped over walls, twining up pergolas and grown along fences.Clematis ‘Ernest Markham’ is exceptionally easy to care for and enjoys a sunny spot to develop. This variety of Clematis thrives when in full sun and will then produce a large array of flowers. A vigorous climber, this Old man’s beard is cloaked in deep green foliage and will even climb through hedges and shrubs for guidance. When planting clematis, choose a position in sun or semi-shade and plant the climber deeply in moist, fertile, well drained soil. Position the top of the rootball at a depth of 7.5cm (3″) below soil level, to encourage new shoots to form from the base of the plant. Clematis dislike soils that are particularly wet or dry. Such soils can be improved by the addition of plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost. When growing clematis in patio containers use a soil based compost such as John Innes No.3. Train clematis plants onto a suitable support such as trellis, wires or a freestanding climbing frame.
