‘Guiding Promise’ is a gorgeous Old man’s beard, that is ready to flower from June until September. It produces masses of huge crinkly, deep purple blooms, that each feature a vivid cream centre. Smothering a compact, yet deciduous growing habit of fresh green foliage, this vibrant Clematis is perfect for growing in containers for trailing, along walls and fences, scrambling through mature shrubs in borders or in cottage themed landscapes. Position in semi shade and watch it flourish in height to 120cm, along with a spread of 100cm. Iris setosa ‘Baby Blue’ is a charming little Iris of petite proportions, reaching just 20cm (8″) tall. Violet veins decorate the lavender-blue petals, which are splashed with white at the centre of each bloom. When planting clematis, choose a position in sun or semi-shade and plant the climber deeply in moist, fertile, well drained soil. Position the top of the rootball at a depth of 7.5cm (3″) below soil level, to encourage new shoots to form from the base of the plant. Clematis dislike soils that are particularly wet or dry. Such soils can be improved by the addition of plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost. When growing clematis in patio containers use a soil based compost such as John Innes No.3. Train clematis plants onto a suitable support such as trellis, wires or a freestanding climbing frame.
