This hardy evergreen Rhododendron is ideal for brightening a shaded acid border.
Rhododendron ponticum Variegatum have dark green leaves, edged with silver. Mauve flowers appear in profusion from late May. More subtle than some variegated varieties the distinctive leaf markings blend into borders and a perfect backdrop for other plants.
Height and spread: 150cm (59″).
Grow Rhododendrons in moist, well drained, acid soil that has been enriched with plenty of well rotted organic matter. Choose a position in semi or dappled shade with shelter from cold drying winds. Many dwarf Rhododendrons can cope with a sunny position provided that the soil remains reliably moist. Where soil conditions are alkaline, Rhododendron plants are best grown in patio containers, using a mix of ericaceous compost and a soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3. Rhododendrons are surface rooting so it is important to avoid planting them too deeply.
