Blackcurrant Ben ConnanBlackcurrant Ben Connan flowers in April and May, it creates masses of glossy black fruits that are rich in flavour – ready to harvest in July. Awarded an RHS Award of Garden Merit, this sought-after Blackcurrant plant is much loved for its heavy cropping! It enjoys growing in a sunny spot and will speedily establish once planted. Ribes nigrum is known to produce over 3.5kg worth of fruit from the second season onwards and is known to continue this for up to 10 years! Its tasty fruits are perfect for making jams and adding to crumbles – Blackcurrant Ben Connan would be ideal for adding to a kitchen or wildlife garden. Blackcurrants prefer a position in full sun but will tolerate semi shade. Shelter from cold winds and late spring frosts as these conditions may damage the flowers, and reduce the yield of fruit later in the year. Grow blackcurrants in rich, moist, well drained soil. Incorporate plenty of well rotted manure into the ground prior to planting. Plant blackcurrant bushes between late autumn and spring, at a distance of 1.5m (5′) apart and a depth of 5cm (2″) lower than the soil mark on the stem. Planting blackcurrants slightly deep will encourage the production of extra stems from below ground level.
