The Rhododendron ‘Whitethroat’ is an excellent specimen shrub. It’s obvious why this deciduous azalea received an RHS AGM. Throughout May, the spectacular, thick clusters of enormous, double white flowers bloom. As the blooming season comes to a conclusion, its vibrant autumn leaves transform boundaries into a blaze of colour. On acid soils, it’s an excellent pick for borders and forest gardens, and it’s especially good for chilly, north-facing locations. Height and spread: 100 cm (39″). It’s easy to see why this deciduous Azalea was awarded an RHS AGM. The large, double white flowers are borne in showy, dense clusters throughout May. Rhododendron ‘Whitethroat’ makes a superb specimen shrub. Grow Rhododendrons in moist, well drained, acid soil that has been enriched with plenty of well rotted organic matter. Choose a position in semi or dappled shade with shelter from cold drying winds. Many dwarf Rhododendrons can cope with a sunny position provided that the soil remains reliably moist. Where soil conditions are alkaline, Rhododendron plants are best grown in patio containers, using a mix of ericaceous compost and a soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3. Rhododendrons are surface rooting so it is important to avoid planting them too deeply.
